Capital's Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching is a department that offers Capital students academic services aimed at improving success. Students made abundant use of CELT's services last year.

"Last year the Center recorded 2,234 visits with 621 different students, which means the average CELT visitor utilized our services 3.6 times," said Bruce Epps, Academic Service Coordinator at CELT.

"That means students were often coming back to the Center for help a second and third time," said Epps.

CELT also holds workshops each year aimed at increasing the proficiency and professionalism of Capital students' writing.

"The Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching's writing workshops are designed to help students learn more about shared expectations and conventions within an academic community," Epps said.

Plagiarism will serve as the subject of the first workshop.

"This workshop will focus on what is sometimes referred to as 'unintentional plagiarism,' which can occur when students lack certain knowledge about proper attribution and citation methods," Epps said.

CELT will also be offering two more workshops in November. "MLA Documentation" will take place at 3:30 on Thursday, Nov. 8 in room 103 of the Learning Center. "APA Documentation" will take place at 3:30 Thursday Nov. 15 in the same location.

CELT also offers a variety of services including peer tutoring, academic coaching, study and review sessions and supplemental instruction.
