Cafe Review: Poche Tea Station
Collin Binkley
Issue date: 2/7/08 Section: Entertainment
The underground dining room at the Pochi Bubble Tea Station bridges the not-so-fine line between Asian feng shui and American quirkiness. On one wall, a television blares overdramatic Asian pop; on the opposite wall hangs a painting of the helm of an old sailing ship, announcing "Welcome Aboard."
The café is best known for its feature beverage: bubble tea.
Bubble tea is a popular Chinese drink that takes the form of either a smoothie or a flavored tea blend with marble-sized, chewy globs at the bottom-the "bubbles."
The bubbles, or "boba," are actually flavorless pearls made from starchy tapioca flour; the result is a sweet smoothie supplemented by the occasional surprise bubble, which makes its way up the straw.
Pochi offers more than 30 flavors and other combinations for bubble tea, ranging from raspberry to coffee to avocado.
For those who aren't inclined to try the textural adventure than is boba, the café offers alternatives to the tapioca pearls too: coconut jelly or pudding.
Along with bubble tea, Pochi also offers dessert crêpes and a small selection of Asian cuisine like spicy oriental noodles and chicken congee.
For the more sociable customers, Pochi has two plush leather couches for lounging, or private tables for a more personal feel.
2060 N. High St., Columbus
The Cost: A drink for $3-4, a meal is $6-8.
The Crowd: Regulars and curious college students.
Collin's Pick: A Buckeye Blitz smoothie with boba.
