For the first time ever, students taking Directing II have the opportunity to run their own theater productions, overseeing everything from choosing the play to selecting the cast.
After nearly a month of preparation, the four one-act plays begin tonight at 8 p.m. in the Cabaret Theatre.
The student-directors are senior Aaron Henley and juniors Erin Marchese, Jordan Shear and Jessica Schollenberger.
Each play will be performed twice; "The Mice Have Been Drinking Again" and "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change" will be 8 p.m. Thursday and Saturday.
"The Ugly Duckling" and "The Marriage Proposal" will be 8 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Sunday.
The four plays each have comical themes, like the musical that says everything about dating that you've always wanted to say, but never have ("I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change") and a story about a married couple who take in a cousin and face many problems the longer she stays ("The Mice Have Been Drinking Again").
"You can do a certain amount of learning in class, but until you actually direct a production it is just theory," Bill Kennedy, director of theatre, said. "Directing a main stage show is a huge activity, and the idea of the one-act plays is for it to be a bridge toward something larger."
"Directing is something I want to continue doing, and it has been nice for me because it is giving me experience," Henley, director of "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change," said. "I learn more by doing than listening, and it has been great."
Marchese, director of "The Ugly Duckling," said, "this has definitely been a learning experience with its ups and downs, but I have learned a lot, and the further I get into it, the more I realize how I could have done things differently."
As first-time directors, the students are eager for opening night.
"I have never directed a show before and I have been nervous," Schollenberger, director of "The Marriage Proposal," said. "It has been a lot of fun, though, and I am excited to get an audience in to see it."
"This is my first time directing and it has been fun, but really, really busy," Shear, director of "The Mice Have Been Drinking Again," said. "The biggest problem has been managing time well, and from a director's point-of-view, you will always think, 'if only I had more time.' "
Tickets are available in the P.O. Lobby. There is no charge for students, but seating is limited.
Henley said, "It is always good to support our fellow students, but this close to finals, we could all use a little laughter."
