New format means big ideas for University Programming

Capital is back in full swing, and so is the staff of campus' University Programming. Last Wednesday, nearly 600 students attended Back at Cap's annual block party. "It's a great way to meet new people right away and have some fun before the pressure of school sets in," Nicole Driver, senior, said. The night featured music, food, and a large foam pit as students mingled during U.P.'s first event of the year.
"It's a programmer's dream to have so many people come out the first week," Marta Diehm, U.P. executive director, said. Every year U.P. sponsors events on campus to entertain and involve the students in campus life.
However, this year they're making a few changes to the system. U.P. is currently in the process of revamping the usual format for the year. No need to worry Wicked Wednesday's are still on the schedule.
U.P. is making the effort to get more students and organizations on campus involved in the activities they schedule.
The plan is still in the works; however, they are trying to develop co-sponsored events with other student organizations. U.P. will provide a contract allowing organizations to sign up and get involved in the planning process.
The goal of the co-sponsored events is that student organizations will not only get their name out, but they will also gain experience in event planning. In turn, this allows U.P. to provide a more "quality" Wicked Wednesday. "Either on a small or large scale, it's our goal to get more students involved," Diehm said.
Wicked Wednesday's are not the only event on the horizon, so is Capital's annual homecoming week. U.P. has also made some changes to the traditional organization of homecoming.
Instead of students voting on their homecoming court in the spring, the voting will be held in the fall. This allows students more time to decide on their candidate and make the best decision. The homecoming dance will then be held Saturday, October 4th in the Capital Center.
Be on the look out for special events and another block party the first week in October in celebration of homecoming week.
