Capital welcomed another class of undergraduate students through the iron gates on East Main Street during the commencement ceremony of last week's orientation.

This year's orientation lasted from Aug. 21 through 25. Capital chose "We challenge you to Capital L.I.F.E." as this year's unified theme, representing a challenge to Lead, Interact, Fulfill, and Engage.

Orientation included a unified theme discussion, a campus services tour, comedian Michael Kent, a trip to Easton, and an ice cream social.

New this year to orientation, the Education Theatre Company of Wilmington College (ETC) performed dramatizations of issues that affect current college students.

"Many students seemed to enjoy the show given by ETC," Molly Ward, co-director of orientation, said. "[I am hopeful it] helped the new students to re-frame some of their thoughts about college."

First-years received their first taste of independent living while acquainting themselves with campus, Bexley, and other students. Many students carpooled to Walmart or other stores to purchase last-minute supplies before classes started.

"It's important for students to come because they are learning the ropes of Capital and starting friendships with their peers," Elyse Cain, co-director of orientation, said.

Commuter students also benefited from orientation by meeting and socializing with students outside of class.

Orientation also represents a great opportunity for upperclassmen to meet new students while exercising leadership skills.

"We are just as excited as the new students, and the atmosphere on campus is absolutely electric," Chelsea Neininger, senior, orientation leader said. "Because we had such an eclectic mix of OLs, all nine days of training and orientation were filled with non-stop laughs. Both OLs and new students had some incidences of sliding, collision, and even tackling during physical team building [games]," Neininger said.

Each class has its own identity, and orientation is the first opportunity to see what this new class will bring to campus life.

"The class of 2012 is a motivated and eager class," Taylor Police, senior, orientation leader, said. "Throughout the entire orientation process, I was asked numerous times about different organizations they could join or about possible internships in the Columbus area. They are full of go-getters, and that is why I believe this will be a great class to lead Capital into the future."
