As the season changes and temperatures drop, so change the safety conditions on campus. To address these issues, Capital University has implemented a new program called "CU Safe."
The first in a series of monthly "CU Safe" events was held on Wednesday, Nov. 12. Public Safety gave two presentations, one focusing on bicycle safety and the other on taking care of one's car battery.
The next session, scheduled for December 10, will be held to discuss holiday safety before students leave for winter break. Other safety topics to be discussed at future events include staying safe in crowds to staying safe while traveling.
Sessions will be lead by Public Safety, or in conjunction with faculty or staff with expertise in the topic.
"We are looking for creative ways to heighten awareness of safety on campus," Betty Lovelace, vice president of student affairs, said.
The main purpose of these events is to promote safety for one's self and one's belongings. Events will occur as afternoon lunches so a greater number of students and faculty can attend.
Events are planned for the second Wednesday of each month.
This program took its first steps about a year ago when President Bowman called for a committee to develop protocols and programs for safety issues.
The committee developed the new CapAlert system which sends out text messages and emails to every student on record in case of emergencies.
In addition, the committee developed and distributed new emergency procedure guides, which include easy references in case of specific problems and a list of previously mentioned "CU Safe" events.
