On February 5, Student Government held a town hall style meeting to discuss possible renovations and remodeling for the Mezzanine. The administration, Student Government, and architects welcomed student input.
Some ideas were to install a bar or a stage, or transform the area into a lounge, club, or even a workout area.
Around forty students come to the meeting, which was held in the Mezzanine.
The final consensus was to turn the area into a combination lounge area, study area, and programming space. Students will be able to relax and study there, but also attend campus programming events.
Most students sought a flexible are to hang out, that would still be open for events.
Junior Hannah Botkin is glad to see something being done with the Mezz.
"It definitely needed to be utilized. The Mezzanine is a huge space that is often forgotten about when it comes to student usage. But it seems almost out too of the way. Three flights of stairs is a lot to ask of some world-weary college student."
Sophomore Rachel Rankin is also in favor of the move. "There have been rumors flying around that they are turning the Mezz into a nightclub, and I completely disagree with that. I think study area and lounge would be good. I think it should have something unique about it, though, so it is not just another lounge. Maybe it should also be like a computer lab or have a TV or a little food station or something else that I can't think of right now that other lounges don't have."
The remodeling will take place over the summer, and should be finished by the start of school in the fall.
The renovation plans are not finished, however; a committee of students has yet to meet with an architect to finalize the decisions on the design of the new Mezzanine.
"Student Government greatly appreciates the support and ideas from the students at the town hall meeting," SG Speaker of the Senate, Brian Harstine said. Be on the look out for the finished product next fall.
