While it may be hard for students to see past the mountain of term papers they're currently buried under, summer is in sight. And while the thought of almost four months of mind-numbing catatonic laziness may seem like heaven at the moment, if you're like most students, you'll get bored-fast.
Of course, there are always the typical summer activities to fall back on: the Columbus Zoo, Zoombezi Bay Waterpark, and the Ohio State Fair.
And unless you've been hiding under a rock (or that 70 page paper for Psychological Research Methods), you've probably heard about big-name concerts this summer such as Kenny Chesney May 2; The Jonas Brothers August 26; or Fallout Boy May 13.
But if you'd rather not hear the music that's played nonstop on nearly every radio station, there are other options as well. There are a number of music festivals taking place, including Loganpalooza May 16th and June 6th.
"[It is] probably the best local Columbus music you will ever hear," Andie Cascioli, first year, said. "It features everything from pop-punk to hardcore to electronic dance music."
Another popular music festival is ComFest, which takes place June 26-28.
"ComFest is a huge hippie festival/community festival in Goodale Park," Janeesa Hollingshead, first year, said. "It's ridiculously fun. People walk around naked and listen to music."
If sports are more your style, there are numerous options available.
Major League Soccer champions the Columbus Crew started their season in March and it will continue until October.
The minor league Columbus Clippers are another popular area team.
"Dime a dog nights are my favorite!" Jessica Yoha, senior, said. "I go to every one of them. You get hot dogs for ten cents apiece."
And if you prefer hand-to-face contact over ball-to-bat contact, Shine Fights is hosting an M.M.A. fight May 9 at the Celeste Center.
For those trying to make it on a budget, there are still plenty of inexpensive activities.
The Festival Latino, which takes place August 16 to 18 in the Geona Park, is free to the public. Authentic Latino food from a variety of regions is served, along with performances by live bands and dancers.
If you're into great food, the Jazz and Ribs Festival lasts from July 24-26, and boasts the greatest number of rib vendors in the nation. The Asian Festival, happening May 23-24, features authentic cuisine, a cultural exhibit, a health pavilion, a marketplace, and different forms of Asian dancing.
