While many students may not connect anyone to Student Government other than president and vice-president Ross Goldsmith and Gabe Koshinsky, an entirely new legislative branch will replace last year's, all of whom are hoping to make a difference on campus.
Apart from Goldsmith and Koshinsky, 33 other Capital students have been elected by their peers to various committees whose responsibilities cover the different facets of campus life.
Those committees are Academic Affairs Committee, Finance, Planning, & Development Committee, Student Activities Committee, Student Life Committee, and Student Interests Committee. Each of these committees has subcommittees which focus on individual issues and groups found on campus.
Some of those subcommittees are Curriculum and Undergraduate Faculty, Educational Support, Organizational Support, Student Outreach, Commuter Concerns, Residence Life, Campus Ministries, Environmental Concerns, and Multicultural Affairs.
Amber Slezak, who was elected onto the Finance, Planning, & Development Committee, hopes to positively influence the Capital community.
"I just want to make sure that everyone that request moneys gets money, and that the money is going for a good purpose, like things that are more beneficial for the campus community," Slezak said.
Heather Harper, a member from the Student Outreach Subcommittee, plans on connecting organizations and groups on campus. Harper, who is also the president for next year's Greek Council, would like to have more unity on campus. She is planning on reaching out to other organizations and faculty to achieve this goal.
Another member of the Student Outreach Subcommittee, sophomore Courtney Swickard, elaborated on the subcommittee's plans for next year.
"The plans that we have for next year include working with Parkhurst to get better meal plan deals- like roll over or being able to convert meal plans to flex dollars," Swickard said. "We also look forward to working with organizations and approving new organizations here on campus."
As of right now, only the Executive and Legislative Branches on Student Government have been filled. The Judicial Branch has not been appointed at this time.
Student Government will meet with the administration to determine the students' needs for next year to begin the year promptly.
