Students take a stand against Georgia Pacific

They wanted to have a strong base of support, to feel they were truly speaking on behalf of a greater part of the campus community.
All together, Wovrosh said they received close to 500 signatures.
"Our biggest step was empowering ourselves," he said. "Thinking we had enough of a voice on campus to get this done."
After hearing their case, Betty Lovelace pointed them to Troy Bonte.
Dean Lovelace sent an email on their behalf, asking him to meet with them.
As Wovrosh described, Bonte seemed impressed that students would have the tenacity to put a group like this and gather support before even meeting with them and was very willing to work with them.
"He's done his research now and we're talking about what we want instead of Georgia Pacific," Wovrosh said. "He's looking into other green alternatives."
There is no current contract between the university and Georgia Pacific. However, there will be if they switch to another company.
Therefore, the university is making and effort to make careful decisions and choose wisely.
However, as Wovrosh states, "it's good to be involved in those decisions," which is a victory for all students.
As far as the newly formed group is concerned, they plan to move on to other issues.
They want to show they will not only speak out about what they are against, but also what they stand for.
"We're hopeful it's something that takes root in Capital's community and is around for a while," Wovrosh said.

It's good to see that students are taking a stand against this company and it's unacceptable that no one is holding the company accountable for the pollution and harm it causes to the environment and community. (Continued…)
