Students take a stand against Georgia Pacific

The Georgia Pacific site located on Watkins Road
in central Ohio, has been in operation since 1970.
In 1994, the Environmental Protection Agency entered into an
agreement with the plant to investigate contamination at the site.
Because of the plant's emergency response activities and progress,
demonstrated during a 1997 batch reactor explosion, the document from
the Ohio EPA now focuses on "operation and maintenance of the existing
measures."
Despite all of this, the community cry for Georgia Pacific to be more
environmentally conscious is only getting louder. According to Ohio
Citizen Action, 15,580 citizens have sent handwritten letters to
Georgia Pacific headquarters, asking them to "be a good neighbor."
Residents of the Columbus area are citing air pollution and damage to
their health and property, including depletion of plants in their
gardens and deteriorating health of themselves and their pets due to
"constant exposure to toxic agents."
With Georgia Pacific being the main paper distributor on campus,
students are getting behind this issue. Students have created a group
asking Capital to consider alternative companies.
"It came out of a non-violent workshop that a bunch of people went
to," junior Matt Wovrosh said. "Georgia Pacific was brought up, and it
carried over to Capital."
Wovrosh explained that the workshop lit a fire under the students,
and encouraged them to be more proactive about the issues they were
concerned about.
"The idea is not to equate pacifism with passive-ism," Wovrosh said.
"People tend to think about an issue as fight or flight and the
passive approach is considered flight. Pacifism is a third option.
It's an active approach that you really throw your whole self into."
Their first step was to get informed. Once they had all their facts
they began to gather student support.
After that they moved on to Renner Hall to get faculty and staff involved.

It's good to see that students are taking a stand against this company and it's unacceptable that no one is holding the company accountable for the pollution and harm it causes to the environment and community. (Continued…)
