Crusader Recap
Issue date: 4/23/09 Section: Sports
Sometimes it can be difficult to piece together everything that's happened over the past eight months but when it comes to athletic achievements the 2008-09 school year was exceptional on and off the playing field.
Fortunately I have been immersed in the successes of the athletic programs at Capital University over that time and it has left me with a vast appreciation of the accomplishments that have taken place. It's important to point the tremendous sacrifices the student-athletes at Capital make to participate in the sport they love.
While many students get to enjoy down time from school with friends, student-athletes have another huge time commitment they must attend to with their respective sports teams. Even the off-season is filled with training for the upcoming season but once the season starts, athletes face the daunting schedule of class, practice, travel, games, and homework.
There is certainly no reason to feel sorry for the athletes as many of them get to do things some of us dream of, like competing at a high level in a sport they love everyday for their school. However I do think it's vital to point out the sacrifices they make and the amount of work it takes to stay on top of your studies while participating in collegiate sport.
With all that being said the successes of the past year by the teams and individuals of Capital has been remarkable. Their hard work and dedication has provided people from all different aspects of the University something to be proud of. Although spring sports have yet to complete their seasons, I want to use this opportunity to take a look back on a memorable year in Capital athletics.
In the fall the men's soccer team won its second consecutive OAC Championship and placed five players on All-OAC teams. The Volleyball team finished the season with 24 wins while seniors Kara Guster and Jackie Helm were named to the ESPN The Magazine Volleyball Academic All-District team. The fall also featured the debut of a Crusader mascot to navigate the sidelines at sporting events.

No mention of what the fastest growing sport in the country actually is, just that the team is playing its first game soon. I'm going to guess lacrosse?
