Corrected: Conservative Christians, conservative campus?
Alane Hiler
Issue date: 10/15/09 Section: Opinion
Let me start out by saying I am probably one of the most morally conservative students on this campus. I'm a Christian woman, and my greatest goals in life are 1) to love and serve God with everything I have, and 2) to encourage my family to do the same. Yes, I think the place in which I most belong is the home; yes, I believe I should "submit to my husband"; and yes, I find the articles in the sex column of The Chimes to be repulsive. Unfortunately, many people in this world and, more specifically, on this campus are not of the same opinion.
I would love to be able to say that Capital is a "Lutheran Christian University" and that that fact makes us conservative, but it's not true. For one, simply because our school has a certain religious affiliation doesn't ensure that the students (or faculty) hold to the values of that religion. Secondly, Capital is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America - a branch of Christianity I would hardly consider conservative. The sect recently voted to allow the blessing of same sex marriages and the ordination of homosexual pastors. Wherever your opinion on this matter lies, I think it's safe to say that these are very liberal actions. Furthermore, many who follow this type of Christianity preach not the Gospel, but tolerance. They're afraid to step on people's toes. Who are they to say what's immoral or sinful? Besides, the Bible has many interpretations. So why not have an ELCA university newspaper which publishes columns about alternative sexual behaviors?
Excuse my snideness. What I really mean to say is: open your eyes. If you're a conservative-minded person at Capital, look around. Why are you shocked that a college newspaper (here or anywhere) would have an article about deflowering virgins? Virginity isn't exactly a valued quality in today's society. The world is broken. Even the church is broken. It's divided, doubting and trying to redeem itself in the eyes of the world, but in the process it's denying the truth. If you are really appalled by what you see, hear or read: do something about it. Reach out. Share your views and faith. No one finds redemption on his own.

This is Christianity as it should be...not passing judgment, not being mean simply for the sake of being mean, advocating acceptance of different viewpoints, and actually being REALISTIC. (Continued…)

I agree, what an awesome article. It is NOT AT ALL EASY TO BE CHRISTIAN IN COLLEGE unless you are lucky enough to go to a Christian school that actually lives the faith. (Continued…)

And concerning your quotation of Romans... Romans 2:3 says: "And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God?"
This means that what God is getting at is CONDEMNATION, not just regular judgement. (Continued…)

Glad to see you can handle criticism in a healthy manner shawn. My interpretation of the Romans passage says that judging someone is in and of itself a bad thing, therefor you shouldn't do it even if you are in the right. (Continued…)

How strange that some of you are the arbiters of what is proper and are certain that no one else may have a say unless they agree with you.
Those of you own the creator of the universe should look again at the bill of sale that gives you ownership. (Continued…)

And how far are you willing to go to 'submit to your husband', Alane? Are you willing to engage in some kind of weird sexual practice if he asks for it but you don't like? Like anal sex? A blowjob, perhaps, esp. (Continued…)
