There are currently about 7,500 people living with AIDS in Ohio, according to aids.org.

HIV/AIDS is a serious problem existing in the world today, and even in the United States millions of people are affected by this disease.

Capital recently raised awareness about AIDS by participating in World AIDS Day and continued with World AIDS Awareness Week, sponsored by the Community Service and Leadership Development Office (CSLD) and Peer Respect in a Diverse Environment (PRIDE).

Brianne Bolding, student service coordinator, commented on organizing the events for this week: "I was really nervous about getting everything together, but it all worked out at the last minute. I am really pleased with how the week is turning out so far."

On Monday, the CSLD set up an information table in the P.O. Lobby of the Campus Center. Students were able to pick up brochures about AIDS as well as free condoms, a red awareness ribbon and wristband.

On Tuesday. students were able to receive free HIV testing in the Mezzanine. Later in the evening, University Programming sponsored the movie "Rent" at the Drexel Theater which was free for all Capital students. The rock opera depicts young people living with HIV/AIDS along with the struggles of living in New York City.

On Thursday, speaker Rey Cordova will speak in Weiler Conference Suites at 7 p.m. The 29-year-old was diagnosed with AIDS on his 13th birthday and will share his story about living with AIDS. Following the presentation, there will be a candlelight service in Kerns Chapel at 9:30 p.m. Students will have a chance to reflect on Cordova's story and other important AIDS-related issues.

Bringing the week to a close on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., students will go to Life Care Alliance to deliver Meals-on-Wheels to HIV/AIDS victims living in Columbus. Those interested in participating should sign up in the CSLD office and report to the P.O. Lobby at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
