Gilbert and Sullivan's comical, light opera is the story of Strephon, who is played by Eric Knapp and Brian Huff. Strephon is a half fairy, half mortal shepherd.
Strephon is in love with Phyllis, a mortal and ward of the Court of Chancery. Samantha Dearborn and Karly Bowman play Phyllis.
When Strephon and Phyllis announce their plans to marry, their peers refuse and take Phyllis away.
Tiffany Mcguire plays Strephon's mother, Iolanthe, and tries to console Strephon.
However, being a fairy, Iolanthe looks very young. When Phyllis sees Strephon kiss his mother, she thinks that he is unfaithfully leading her to marry someone else.
At the end of Act I, Phyllis is between two peers, Lord Mountararat (Mario Clopton) and Lord Tolloller (Darita Seth).
In Act II, many knots are untangled and secrets revealed. However, all will end well for both the fairies and mortals.
For anyone who wants to discover the secrets and find out what becomes of Strephon and Phyllis, Iolanthe will debut 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 29 with other performances at 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30 and 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 31.
"The show is coming along really well," Mark Baker, conservatory professor and Iolanthe director, said. "I think the people will love it."
The show is the season opener for Capital's new concert series, "Capital at the Lincoln."
Capital has recently teamed up with the Lincoln Theatre to feature performances by conservatory students and faculty members.
"We're the first group in the series to use the Lincoln Theatre," Baker said. "It's truly a wonderful space to be at. It's definitely worth the three miles for people to drive and see the show."
According to Baker, this opera is only the second theatrical production to take place at the Lincoln, and it is the first time a full pit has been used.
Besides Iolanthe, other performances include "Jazz with a Capital J," "Contemporary Music Ensembles" and "Robert Ray's Gospel Mass."
"Jazz with a Capital J" will include the Jazz Consort, Capital's faculty jazz ensemble and Big Band. The show will debut Sunday, Feb. 21.
Fusion Band, MIDI Band and Rock Ensemble will all be featured Sunday, March 14 at Contemporary Music Ensembles.
Capital's well-known Chapel Choir will be performing Robert Ray's Gospel Mass on Sunday, March 28.
Tickets are on sale now for Iolanthe and are $20 for general admission.
They can be ordered online through ticketmaster.com or by phone through the CAPA ticket office at 614-469-0939.

I was very skeptical when the curtains opened and I saw a stage filled with fairies.
And yet, even with this being my first opera, I was pleasantly surprised. (Continued…)

Samantha Dearborn as Phyllis was captivating! A beautiful face with a beautiful voice and yet she can still be comical! The Chancellor was an absolute HOOT! And he could sing so fast! The entire opera was very enjoyable! What wonderful work by all!
