As "Swimming in the Flood" comes across my Pandora station, I find myself confronted with the ineffable. Are they dance, indie, techno...? MGMT or Kanye?

If you're hoping to hear a unique style that will make you wonder why you never listened to them before, then you'll be sorely disappointed.

However, that should be a comforting fact. The "new" music of the present is Lady Gaga, Lady Antebellum, etc.

Passion Pit exemplifies the simplistic, clean-cut sound that is strangely stimulating.

Unlike the amoral, always over-the-top Kesha, this band brings meaning to their songs that is deeper, beyond surface-level contemplation.

With these descriptions, it may sound as if the individual members are well past the age that college students would find entertaining.

This is not the case.

The people created in the songs realize that there are more important things to worry about than the stereotypical, benign problems of girls, alcohol, and drugs.

What's encouraging about a group like this is that they're never satisfied with the status quo.

They're not content with what already sounds acceptable to their fans.

They will keep pushing, keep exploring, and keep creating what they feel is the next step in their mission to entertain and inspire crowds.

What this means is that once you see them live or listen to an album, you cannot say, "been there, done that."

There will always be that something that keeps you coming for more.

Don't get me wrong, they a distinct sound that is going to be the underlying foundation in everything that they create.

But it is what they build above this plateau that keeps evolving.

This is something that simply cannot be achieved through meeting someone in the back with the jack and the jukebox.

Yet they are not perfect. Their synthesizing skills need some polishing.

And at some points I'm wondering when the thirty-second intro will end and the actual song with the actual meaning will start to come out of my speakers.

But then again, they're fairly new.

No one should expect a perfect album every time.

These are minor flaws compared to some of the disastrous performances at the Grammy's (Taylor Swift...).

Flawlessness, though, is also unappealing.

How can you connect to a message that doesn't reflect your own qualities?

This band is worth more to listen to than whatever song you currently have on repeat.

Passion Pit plays in Columbus March 31. After filling up the Newport, the show was moved to the LC Pavillion.
